Director Research
Martin Scorsese
Martin Charels Scorsese is a renowned director especially of films about crime, morality and identity which is seen in his Psychological drama film “Taxi Driver” also one of his most celebrated works. It’s a dark exploration of isolation and violence in New York.
On 17th November 1942 Martin opened his eyes in a flushing neighbourhood of Queens in New York City. He grew up in Manhattan with his parents Charles and Catherine. Martin’s father Charles was a clothes presser and an actor and her mother Catherine was a seamstress and an actress. The influence of his parents profession can be clearly seen on Martin’s life. Being an asthma child always being in supervision of his parents his most of the time was spent in theaters and cinema and from there his love for films and filmmaking was sown in him. The start of his education was in a complete opposite direction, as he originally aimed to become a priest attending seminary briefly before shifting his ways to media studies. After securing a degree in B.A English in 1968, He started his M.A in English. During his undergraduate years he made his early work which includes a short film “The Big Shave” and his first feature “Who’s that knocking on my door” both in 1967. Later Martin co-edited the documentary in 1970 and directed “Mean Streets” in 1973 which was his breakthrough cementing his relationship with Robert De Niro.
Some of the most well-known crime films ever made were directed by Martin Scorsese. His Casino (1995) examines crime and power in Las Vegas, while Goodfellas (1990) is a classic tale of a gangster. The Departed (2006) earned him his sole Best Director Oscar. Later, Killers of the Flower Moon (2023), which received multiple Oscar nominations, told the true story of murders in 1920s America, while The Irishman (2019) displayed the perspective of regret in the world of gangsters.
Influenced by his catholic upbringing Martin’s films have religious and moral themes which revolve around sin, guilt and redemption. These themes often carry emotional depth and intense mise en scene and so his directing style was focused on techniques which can display human nature and emotions in the best possible way. Similarly my film is about Honor Killing which also revolves around religious and social themes. As he uses dynamic camera movements like long tracking shots, the example of which can be seen in the famous copacabana nightclub scene in Goodfellas, I can take inspiration from it to add emotional depth in tragic scenes. He also uses sudden cuts to create energy and tension. Martin used voice overs and narration where characters directly narrate the story to the audience making it feel personal. Martin has distinctive soundtracks as he uses Pop and rock era music to heighten mood and tone. He develops the character psychology very deeply, especially a distorted man with power greed or a man with self doubts. And this closely aligns with my concept of man following traditional thinking like an obligation and resulting in criminal acts like killing. Being an artist Martin’s working style was the same as it is of a creative man. Specifically talking about his style for improvement in his work. He used to build long term relations with actors for example Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio, often tailoring roles for them. He was a very detail oriented person who wanted every detail like camera and light placements, and even small performance details to be precise. Though he allows creative freedom to actors to bring more natural feel in the scene. Works with passion for film history often bringing classic films as reference in his own works.
One of the best filmmakers of all time, Martin Scorsese is renowned for his ability to combine intense emotion with realistic grit. He is the winner of multiple awards like Oscar, Golden Globes, BAFTA, and Palme d’Or. Also Martin was the founder of “The Film Foundation” which worked in order to preserve classic films. He has influenced contemporary filmmaking with his distinct style, which includes dynamic camera work, compelling characters, and memorable musical selections. With hits like Killers of the Flower Moon, The Departed, and Goodfellas, Scorsese has left a lasting legacy as a master filmmaker who continues to inspire a new generation of filmmakers around the globe.
